About me

Hypnobirthing midwife

Hi my name is Sue Banks, I have been a registered midwife since 2011.  During my time as a midwife I have been privileged to observe many women birth how nature intended with the use of hypnobirthing. I became a hypnobirthing practitioner in  September 2013 with association of hypnobirthing midwives to help assist women reduce there fears of childbirth. I am passionate about normalising birth.

My background

After completing my family with my fourth child in 2007, I decided to fulfil my dream and enter the world of midwifery. Throughout the past 6 years I have moved and lived in Yorkshire and helped many mothers and their families give birth calmly. My family  relocated back to Reading. I have done voluntary midwifery in Africa in 2017 which was a wonderful experience. I currently work as a community midwifery with the NHS. ***Please note: I do not offer independent midwifery care***.

My Promise

My goal is to help you feel confident for the birth of your baby.

You can contact me for support up to the birth of your baby.

Sessions include

Hypnobirthing and birth preparation

Are you anxious about giving birth?

Would you like to feel confident and feel in control?

Would you like to achieve a positive, gentle and calm experience of birth for you, your partner and your baby?

Hypnobirthing gives you the tools to feel in complete control and enforces trust in the birthing process. It replaces fear and anxiety with confidence that will allow your body to work easily and efficiently.

A Hypnobirthing course will give you and your partner the ability to remain calm, so that you can use your natural birthing instincts to birth your baby in a way that nature intended without fear, gently, relaxed and calmly.

Confidence building

Hypnobirthing allows pregnant women and their birthing partners to feel confident, calm, relaxed and in control during childbirth. Hypnobirthing allows the process of birth to be easier and how nature intends it to be, free from fear and tension. The techniques taught through hypnobirthing allows your body to do what it is designed to do and will enable you to give birth gently and in control.

Use of massage and breathing techniques

The use of massage and breathing techniques can allow you to feel deeply relaxed. It also aids the production of oxytocin (the love hormone). The use of touch can make you feel loved, make you feel good calm and relaxed. Deep controlled breathing helps you inhale oxygen deeper and helps the muscles to remain soft whilst you remain relaxed and focused.

What is it all about?

What is hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing is primarily the mind/body connection with birth which incorporates self-hypnosis to eliminate negative thoughts around birth, predominately the fear or birth itself and the pain that is experienced. Hypnosis is quite simply deep relaxation which gradually gives a sense  of total control and calmness during birth. This calmness brings with it a clear mind to stay focused as well as being aware of the changes of the birthing body to enable you to make decisions when required.

The mind/body connection has long been established and used in different cultures.  ‘The Father of Natural Childbirth’ Dr. Grantly Dick-Read, a 1920-30’s obstetrician , recognised the connection between fear and pain. The author of ‘Childbirth Without Fear’  found a theory about the connection between fear and pain of childbirth and discovered that women birthing free from fear experienced calmer birth.

Is hypnobirthing for you?

Hypnobirthing can be used by any pregnant women whether it is her first or subsequent pregnancy planning a vaginal delivery or calm caesarean.

Hypnobirthing can be a useful tool for those who have had a previous traumatic birth experience, and those who have had a complicated pregnancy.

The aim of this course is to teach you and your birth partner the importance of replacing fear with confidence for birth. You will learn how fear and tension can work against the birthing body, making the birthing process more difficult. Being confident in your birthing body will enable it to work easily and more efficiently. This, together with self hypnosis and relaxation, massage and breathing techniques which will also be taught during the course will ensure you remain calm and relaxed promoting a positive, gentle and calm experience of birth for you, your birthing partner and baby.
